Have you ever wondered how sailors became known as “limeys”? It all has to do with the
disease ‘scurvy.’ In fact, the word ‘ascorbic’ in ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is derived from the ISV
a- and the Latin scorbutus (scurvy). Although scurvy has been described and documented as
far back as Hippocrates, it was not until the 1700s when a Scottish captain in the British Royal
Navy, Dr. James Lind, proved that eating citrus fruit prevented scurvy. Deciding it was the acidic
nature of the citrus fruit, doctors of the time thought limes would be even more beneficial, so the
British Royal Navy stocked limes on their ships. Hence, the slang name for sailors came to be
“limeys.” Just think if they had Alka-C back then!
We have greatly advanced our understanding of ascorbic acid since those times. It has been
widely used clinically and nutritionally as an antioxidant, for immune support, as treatment for
cold and flu, to support adrenal function, the ability to make healthy tissue through the formation
and maintenance of collagen, and to assist with a wide range of viral, bacterial and fungal
infections and inflammatory problems of all kinds.
Ascorbic acid has been shown to be absorbed
into the body within two hours and out of the blood
within three to four hours. It is used up more
rapidly: under stressful situations, with diabetes, in
the elderly, with smoking and with alcohol use. It is
the most commonly supplemented vitamin and the
most well-known.
