How Does It Work?

Calcium D-glucarate plays an important role in the body's natural detoxification processes, specifically by enhancing healthy estrogen metabolism.† Detoxification Detoxification refers to the breakdown and excretion of substances that are no longer needed or may be harmful to the body. One of the ways in which the body excretes hormones and toxins is by binding them to glucuronic acid in the liver, and then excreting the compound in bile. This process can be disrupted by beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme produced by intestinal bacteria. Beta-glucuronidase breaks the chemical bonds established between glucuronic acid and the spent hormones or toxins. As a result, the bound toxins (called xenobiotics) can be released and reabsorbed in the body instead of being excreted.

Detoxification in the liver is a two-step process. In Phase I Detoxification, oxidation is used to break down the toxins. In Phase II, a lipophilic (fat-loving) compound is combined with a water-soluble substance which is more easily transported by bile and excreted from the body.
