Core Milk Thistle (formerly Core Carduus Marianus)is a Spagyric preparation of the botanical commonly known as Milk Thistle. Its use has dated back to the earliest Greek references as a liver-protecting agent, and in the first century was known in Sicily, Syria and Phoenicia to assist with “carrying off bile.” Historical references concerning Milk Thistle are abundant in many herbal texts from the Middle Ages, especially in Germany, for its treatment of liver disease. It was given its scientific name of Carduus Mariae officinalis by Hildegard of Bingen, who composed the first herbal manuscript written by a woman. By the turn of the century, Milk Thistle had become an obscure plant, losing its popularity, but it was soon “rediscovered” by German researchers and physicians in the 1930’s for its well-documented traditional use.

Since that time, Milk Thistle has been recognized for its historical success in supporting chronic inflammatory liver disorders like hepatitis and cirrhosis. Other traditional uses have been for chemically-induced fatty liver disorders from alcohol or environmental pollution, as a hepatoprotective, to reduce oxidative stress and to regenerate liver cells. Researchers have found that one of the active phytochemicals in Milk Thistle, silymarin, increases protein synthesis in liver cells by increasing the activity of ribosomal RNA, thereby activating the liver’s ability to regenerate and develop new cells. Along with the vast support Milk Thistle offers liver conditions, it also has been used traditionally for gall bladder disorders related to inflammation of the bile ducts, thus reducing bile flow, and with cholestasis where there is a stagnation of bile flow due to congestion.
