Flora 12+ by Energetix is an excellent complement to Flora Synergy, Flora 12+ is a multi-strain probiotic that contains a
mixture of 12 beneficial bacteria plus Sacchromyces boulardii.
This formula is designed to offer a
broad range of probiotic strains that can help improve intestinal microbial balance. The intestinal microflora
plays a critical role in the whole health of the body and may be thrown out of balance by high
sugar diets, chronic infection and overuse of antibiotics, among other things. Flora 12+ is designed
to help repopulate depleted strains of these critical bacteria.
Studies have demonstrated that beneficial flora are important for the maturation of the immune
system and can also help maintain a balanced inflammatory immune response in the gut. More
specifically, these “friendly” bacteria are known to help strengthen the immune response associated
with the intestinal mucosa and may prevent the attachment of pathogens and the entry of allergens
into the body. Other evidence shows that they also help facilitate digestion and relieve digestive
disorders.
The probiotic strains included in Flora 12+ are primarily a combination of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium
species. Lactobacillus has been found to be most numerous in the small intestine and
female reproductive organs, where Bifidobacterium normally inhabits the colon. The “plus” in the
product name is for Sacchromyces bouladrii. This probiotic yeast was included for its broad-acting
benefit in helping maintain and restore the natural flora in the small and large intestines. Studies
also suggest that Saccharomyces boulardii may have a strong antagonistic effect against a variety
of Candida strains.
The formula also contains a small amount of FOS. This nutrient is classified as a prebiotic, which is a
non-digestible food ingredient that has been found to stimulate the growth and activity of microflora
in the intestinal tract. For a specific description regarding each probiotic strain see the list of key
ingredients below.
Flora 12+ is a multi-strain probiotic formulation that may serve as a foundational support for the
gastrointestinal tract. It can be used in any healing strategy to support the immune response of the
gut, to assist overall digestive function and to replenish critical flora that has been depleted due to
overuse of antibiotics.
Key Ingredients:
B. breve – A lactic acid forming bacteria that has been found to enhance the immune response in Peyers patches. It has been demonstrated that it may enhance the T helper 1 immune response and reinforce the intestinal
barrier.
L. acidophilus – The best known, most widely studied and most prevalent probiotic in the intestinal tract. Studies have found that it may help stimulate
immune response and help improve lactose intolerance by producing lactase and providing antimicrobial substances.
B. bifidum – This strain of probiotic is mostly found in the large intestine
and female reproductive organs. Studies suggest it may help reduce intestinal concentrations of endotoxin and it was found to adhere to the intestinal
wall and reduce the ability of E. coli to adhere to the intestinal wall.
L. delbrueckii (ssp bulgaricus) – Considered a transient bacterium because it does not adhere to the intestinal wall and does not form colonies,
but passes through the digestive system and helps other bacteria to better colonize the intestines. Studies not only show this species may inhibit
inflammatory responses that can damage the gut wall, but that it may also stimulate the immune defenses against pathogens in the gut.
L. rhamnosus – Research shows this particular strain of bacteria may be used for infection and allergic conditions and there is promising evidence
that L. rhamnosus may greatly assist with diarrhea associated with Clostridium
difficile infection. A separate study indicates it may also help with allergic reactions in infants with atopic eczema.
S. salivarius thermophilus – Classified as a lactic acid bacteria, it has been shown to assist with the recovery of malnutrition after short-term
fasting and to lessen colonic mucosal atrophy.
B. infantis – Studies have shown this particular strain may have an antagonistic effect against E. coli, and it may relieve symptoms associated
with irritable bowel syndrome, including diarrhea and constipation.
B. longum – A Bifidobacterium strain that studies have shown it to inhibit vero cytoxin, a toxin produced by some E. Coli, which can cause hemorrhagic
colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. B. longum has also been shown to have a protective effect against infection with Salmonella
typhimurium, possibly due to an anti-inflammatory action.
L. brevis – A transient bacteria that is found in milk, kefir, cheese and sauerkraut.
It helps produce lactic acid and natural antibacterial agents that may inhibit unfriendly strains of microorganisms.
L. casei – Studies have shown it to be one of the strongest Lactobacillus strains that may protect against Listeria bacterial infection as well as assist
with H. pylori. Other studies suggest it is helpful with acute diarrhea,
candidal vaginitis and in stimulating the immune system.
L. salivarius – This strain has shown in clinical trails to have an anti-Helicobacter
pylori (H. pylori) effect. It has been found that L. salivarius action
may be attributed to its ability to produce lactic acid to help inhibit H. pylori
and the associated inflammation.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ssp boulardii) – This non-pathogenic strain of
yeast has been studied for its probiotic affect; assisting with the maintenance
and restoration of the natural flora in the small and large intestines.
Studies have found it to assist with acute diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome,
ulcerative colitis and antibiotic associated diarrhea.
L. helveticus – May promote gut mucosal immunity and overall health of
the intestinal microflora.
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) – Considered a prebiotic, fructooligosaccharides
is a non-digestible fiber used by friendly bacteria to grow and multiply.
