Laryngitis

Laryngitis is an inflammation of the voice box, or larynx, that causes the voice to become raspy or hoarse. It can be short-lived (acute) or long lasting (chronic). Most of the time, laryngitis comes on quickly and lasts as long as two weeks. Laryngitis is caused by overuse, irritation, or infection of the vocal cords inside the larynx. Some of the most common causes are: an upper respiratory infection (bacterial or viral - especially a cold or flu), straining or overuse of the voice (such as by prolonged loud talking, shouting, cheering, or singing), allergies, exposure to irritants (such as smoke or chemicals), and gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). This is called reflux laryngitis. Recommendations include antibacterial / antiviral supplementation and digestive enzymes.*
