Obesity

Obesity refers to an abnormal increase in body fat and is usually synonymous with being overweight. This condition is on the rise particularly in the U.S. where our diets consist of fast food, high fat, and sugar. Unfortunately, even health-conscious individuals who restrict their fat and sugar intake are becoming heavier. We are eating less fat, but replacing it with carbohydrates. These carbohydrates are quickly turned to sugar, which stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin. If there is a high level of insulin, the body will convert this sugar into fat. The key to weight control is balance. Eating a balanced diet and balancing pH is the first step in the process. Restricting carbohydrate intake and increasing protein consumption is not the answer to weight loss and maintenance. In fact, too much protein is difficult for the body process, forcing the kidneys to work overtime. A diet consisting of complex carbohydrates (these are slow acting carbs which convert into glucose slowly), moderate amounts of protein, and good fats (such as vegetable and EFA's) are essential to overall health.*
